Grey's Anatomy Might Be Ending Soon, According To Ellen Pompeo
Are we going to say goodbye to Meredith Grey soon?
Now that its 15th season is about to start, Grey’s Anatomy has become a pop culture legend. But after running for so many years, many are starting to wonder: When will Greys Anatomy end?
According to Ellen Pompeo, who plays titular character Meredith Grey, we might see the end of this medical drama soon. See, late last year, Shonda Rhimes revealed that the medical drama will continue for as long as leading lady Ellen Pompeo stars on the show. And in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she reveals that she’s only signed a contract until the end of Season 16.
Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the show will end at 16 seasons, but it’s very possible. Although Pompeo says that she “still care[s] very much about the show”, it seems like she’s ready to move on.
“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell,” she says.
“It’s about time that I mix it up,” she adds. “I’m definitely looking for a change.”
When will Greys Anatomy end? Shonda and Ellen’s pact
Currently, Pompeo takes home a whopping US$575,000 per episode, not including a signing bonus and equity points. But whatever decision she makes, she’ll be doing it with creator Shonda Rhimes.
“We’re getting there. Shonda and I will make that decision together,” she told Us Weekly earlier this year. “I think that one of the biggest lessons that this show has taught me and being on this show for so long has taught me, is that relationships do change. And they do grow. They take work. Like any marriage, friendship. You gotta put in the work. You have to accept other people’s flaws, and accept your own flaws and try to change and be a better person. But I think everything is worth the time and effort. And things get better.”
In an earlier interview with E! News, Rhimes said: “The show will exist as long as both of us want to do it. If she wants to stop, we’re stopping. So I don’t know if we’ll see 600, but I want to keep it feeling fresh. As long as there are fresh stories to tell and as long as we’re both excited about the stories being told, we’re in. So, we’ll see where that takes us.”
Pompeo revealed that she wants to be more involved in her children’s lives as they grow older. “They need me more, and this world is such a crazy place,” she said. After Grey’s Anatomy, she says she’s interested in working behind the camera, particularly producing. “It’s like one problem after another, it’s problem-solving 101. It’s like a great experiment in problem-solving. Acting is … it’s a young girl’s game. You’ve gotta travel, you’ve gotta be away. [You’ve] gotta go here and work at night in the rain. I’m not saying I’ll never do it. If there’s an amazing opportunity I’m sure, of course I’ll do it.”
Pompeo also revealed that she already has an idea of how the show will conclude, but hasn’t revealed any details, of course. Even though we know absolutely nothing about the end of the show, we’re sure of this: we’ve gotta be prepared with the tissues.
