What Happens To Your Breasts When You Sleep With Your Bra On
Wearing bra at night will do no wonders to your breasts, especially if sagging is your major concern
You may have heard your titas and aunties say that wearing bra at night can cause sagging. But contrary to popular belief, some women (including Marilyn Monroe) prefer to sleep with a tight bra on in the hopes that it will keep their pecks perky and prevent sagging.
But what is the real truth?
We decided to dispel myths and find out if wearing bra at night really cause sagging? Does it impact the shape, size or perkiness or your breasts and more importantly, does it have any medical implications? We investigated.
Wearing Bra At Night: Is It Good Or Bad For Health?
As you know, breast sagging is a natural process. With age, every woman experiences it, irrespective of whether or not you sleep with your bra on each night. The medical reason for this process is that the connective tissue that keeps your breasts perky loses its elasticity over time.
Although apart from age, there are other factors that contribute to sagging breasts. These include the following:
- Excessive weight loss or gain
- High-intensity physical exercise
So even if you wear your bra at night, when you go through the aforementioned changes, they affect the shape and size of your boobs. With that said, it doesn’t mean wearing a bra at night in bed doesn’t lead to sagging.
Wearing Bra At Night Doesn’t Ensure Your Beasts Won’t Sag
Scientifically, sagging occurs when the breast ligaments (also called Cooper’s ligaments) are pulled down by gravity. And heavier the breasts, faster the sagging.
“When you’re lying down flat, the effect of gravity pushes the breast tissue back towards your chest, instead of down towards your toes. So wearing a bra (the purpose of which is ultimately to support breasts from below) is essentially redundant in bed, as breasts naturally compress back down onto the chest,” Dr Rankin explains.
He also added that if you lay on the bed for prolonged periods, it can prevent sagging. But this process will require more than seven to eight hours of sleep and who’s got time to lay in the bed for more than 20 hours per day.
So basically, even if you spend your entire life wearing bra at night, it won’t prevent them from sagging. However, a wrong-sized bra can have medical complications if worn at night.
Wearing The Correct Sized Can Prevent Medical Complications
“With regard to the breast tissue itself: if your bra often leaves impressions in your skin from being too tight, then wearing it 24/7 won’t give the skin a chance to recover and bounce back from these, leading to long-term indents in the tissue, “warned Dr Rankin.
“Then aside from the breasts themselves, there’s a lot going on by way of important anatomy around the chest area: from muscles to vessels, lymph nodes to nerves. If your bra is too tight, you may be restricting your blood supply to the breasts and surrounding areas,” the doctor told Cosmopolitan UK.
He further explained, “The same goes for the lymphatic system: a tight bra may restrict the flow of lymph to the many important lymph nodes around the breast and armpit, hindering the system’s vital function of flushing toxic waste-products from the body.”
So the best way to prevent this from happening is by selecting the right-sized bra.
How To Pick The Right-Sized Bra
In order to pick the right-sized bra, begin by wearing your most comfortable bra (you can do this without one too). Using a measuring tape to note down the band size (the area right underneath your breasts). Then measure your bust size by wrapping your measuring tape across the back and over the fullest part of your breasts.
If the difference between the band size and the cup size in 1 inch, you should opt for a size-A cup. However, if it is two, three, four or five inches, you should buy cup B, C, D and DD, respectively.
Although wearing the right-sized bra is crucial to help maintain your breasts, but they cannot prevent them from sagging.
As for wearing one at night, Dr Rankin pointed, it doesn’t make a difference if you choose to stop doing that altogether.
