Aside from a growing tummy and several changes in the body, a woman should also expect  some pains and discomforts during pregnancy. Common discomforts may include backache, hipache, and even a pain in the lower abdomen, which can be a sign of round ligament pain

The round ligament is a fibro-muscular connective tissue that helps support the uterus. It also connects the womb or the front part of the uterus to the groin area. 

As the baby grows in the uterus, the round ligament gets stretched. While it gets thicker as the uterus grows, round ligament can be strained, too, which causes a throbbing pain.

As mentioned, round ligament pain is one of the normal conditions that a woman can feel during pregnancy. However, this can be concerning and uncomfortable. 

The main symptom of round ligament pain is a sharp and sudden spasm in your lower abdomen. This jabbing feeling is most often felt during the second trimester and usually lasts for a while.

The following movements may cause round ligament pain: 

  • Exercise
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Standing up quickly
  • Sitting
  • Rolling over the bed

Moms-to-be must not panic when they feel the round ligament pain. There are simple remedies that can help reduce the discomfort it causes. 

  • Do light exercise such as Kegel exercise which helps strengthen the pelvic floor muscles or vaginal muscles, and muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels. Stretching and yoga exercises can also be helpful. Make sure to ask your doctor first about the exercises that are safe for you and your baby. 
  • Take a warm bath or apply a heating pad on the area where you feel the pain. Consult your doctor for the right warmth that is safe for your baby. 
  • Change your positions slowly to avoid contraction of the round ligament. When lying in bed, you may use pregnancy pillows to provide support to your back or your legs. Meanwhile, when standing up, you may use a pregnancy belt that helps reduce pressure and weight of the baby thus, giving you extra support to avoid pain in the lower abdomen.
  • See a massage therapist if you must to help you with stretching to avoid pulling on the ligaments.

Remember, round ligament pain is usually quick. A prolonged pain may be a sign of a more serious condition. So, always inform your doctor about any type of pain that you may feel during pregnancy.
