Top 10 Reverse Harem Animes For Otaku Girls Everywhere
For your guilty pleasure viewing. ;)
Having multiple guys vying for your attention gets old fast in real life, but in fiction, it's a riot. Check out some of our faves in this reverse harem anime 2018 list.
Our protagonist Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at the ultra-posh Ouran Academy. Because Haruhi has short hair, many of her schoolmates believe her to be a boy. One day, she accidentally knocks over an antique vase costing ¥8,000,000, and is told to make up for it by acting as the errand boy of the Ouran Academy Host Club — a group of male students who entertain female clients with high tea and conversation.
Ouran is arguably today's most popular reverse harem anime, and for good reason. Hilarious from start to finish, it's one of the most entertaining animes out there — even reverse harem haters will enjoy it.
After her mother's death, Tohru Honda ends up living with the Sohma family. Later, she finds out that the Sohmas live with a curse. They are possessed by spirits of the Chinese zodiac, and when they are weak, under stress, or hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they turn into their spirit animal.
It's got lots of romance, handsome boys, and cute animals to boot. What's not to like?
Yona lives a cushy life as a princess, but when her emperor father is assassinated, her life gets turned upside down as she tries to protect her kingdom.
Even though Yona can get a tad annoying, the show is funny and keeps things interesting with just the right mix of fantasy, action, drama, and of course, romance.
Nanami was just an ordinary schoolgirl until one day, the earth deity Mikage tricks her into replacing him as the new deity. Though reluctant at first, she ends up taking her role as the earth deity seriously, and even ends up having feelings for one of the shrine spirits...
Sounds intriguing? Kamisama Kiss is a charming show with a perfect combination of supernatural romance and comedy. It's a light watch that's super easy to get into — perfect to unwind with after a long day at work/school/whatever.
In another anime about schoolgirls meeting deities, schoolgirl Yui gets whisked away to the realm of the gods so she can teach the young gods what it means to be human. The catch? They're all stuck up and lacking in compassion, and she only has a year to complete her mission — if she fails, they're all stuck there forever.
With beautiful art and a riveting storyline, Kamigami no Asobi stands out from most reverse harems because its heroine has a real, actual personality. Also, romance isn't the most important part of its plot, which may disappoint some, but can also make for a refreshing watch.
(You're halfway through our reverse harem 2018 list! Has your favourite popped up already?)
Four male university students find a house to stay in for free — on one condition. They must turn the girl of the house into "a lady". That sounds simple enough, but Nakahara Sunao is a gloomy, weird, and sometimes downright scary girl. Hijinks ensue.
Comedy is a huge part of this anime, and while there are hints of romance here and there, it definitely isn't the focus of this series. If you want something downright hilarious that's not like any other reverse harem that you've ever seen before, The Wallflower is just right for you.
One of the OG reverse harems out there, Fushigi Yuugi still makes it on our reverse harem anime 2018 list because it's a classic, and has doubtless inspired several of the newer animes in this list. Junior high students Miaka and Yu are doing research in the library when they are transported into the world inside a mysterious book.
It has a lot of action, adventure, and romance. In fact, one could say that it has too much romance. (We get it, Tamahome and Miaka love each other. Can we skip all the long gazes and embraces and get back to the plot?)
Set in 1864 Japan, Hakuouki is about a young woman who finds herself in the middle of a huge political battle when she witnesses a group of ronin (samurai without a master) being murdered by white-haired men. She then ends up being protected by the Shinsengumi (a special police force).
This historically inspired anime isn't everyone's cup of tea, and our main gripe with Hakuouki is that the protagonist doesn't do much — it's the members of the Shinsengumi who make this anime shine. But the fact that it was based on actual historical events makes it a must-watch for those of you who are interested in that aspect of Japanese culture.
Even though Shuurei Kou was born into a noble family, she has to work odd jobs to make ends meet (her dad is basically a librarian who gets paid in peanuts). But one day, a court adviser offers to make Shuurei the concubine of the new emperor to teach him how to be a good ruler for the price of 500 pieces of gold.
The plot may seem like your average reverse harem, but this anime is a lot more than that. It's got a smart, capable heroine who follows her dream to work in politics in spite of the limitations society has placed on her. Plus, it's pretty funny.
This is the reverse harem anime 2018 for every fangirl who, instead of daydreaming about making out with a good-looking man, ships good-looking men together. When nerdy Kae rapidly loses weight (because of the death of her favourite anime character!) and becomes conventionally attractive, she gains the attention of the boys around her.
It's silly, it's light, and it's a fun watch. There really isn't much to the plot, but it's enjoyable and has really pretty art. And if you're a long-time otaku, you'll love the anime references!
