Was This 13-Year-Old Inspired By The Legendary Janis Joplin?
Imagine flying from England to America to perform in one of the most famous talent show franchises known and make the audience stand to their feet.
During her performance on America’s Got Talent, a shy 13-year-old Courtney Hadwin from County Durham, England, wowed the audience and judges alike. Her rock-and-roll performance that looked inspired by Janis Joplin earned her a standing ovation as well lots of hugs and adulations.
A far cry away from her demure self, Hadwin came across as a confident and self-assured singer when she began crooning on stage. But teenager admitted that she was 'nervous' and even stumbled upon some of the judges’ questions.
When the shy and nervous Hadwin came onstage, her fright was seemingly obvious. So much so that the judges had to assure her that being nervous was totally understandable and wished her luck on her performance.
Courtney bowed her head and collected herself to start her performance. But what followed next blew everybody's minds.
As soon as the music kicked in, the shy British girl transformed into a rockstar. She even showcased some of her dance moves! Take a look.
Recalling her audition, Courtney reveals that she felt like she ‘switched bodies’.
“I remember singing and then getting to a certain point in the song and seeing people enjoy it, which made me really happy. I must’ve been doing something right,” she shared in an interview with the Press Association.
Her cover performance of Otis Redding’s song Hard To Handle earned her a standing ovation from the audience and the show’s judges.
Her voice impressed Simon Cowell so much that he noted that Courtney was genuinely incredible and even called her a ‘lion.’
Even Howie Mendel commented, “You are not from this era. You are from a whole different era.” He then went on to mention the late Janis Joplin, confessing that he is a huge fan of hers.
For the uninitiated, Janis Joplin was the lead singer of psychedelic-rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her high, husky, earthy, and explosive voice earned her the chance to be part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
She has remained as one of the greatest and most powerful rock singer ever known and has influenced a lot of singers as well.
Mandel then continued his speech and told the story of how Joplin was signed to a record deal by Clive Davis at the Monterey Pop Festival. Joplin's life changed when she was first signed.
He admitted not being able to do the same for Courtney. So instead, he did a not-very-surprising move and pressed the golden buzzer!
The rest of the judges, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, and Mel B also stood up and applauded in agreement to his decision.
As you know receiving a golden buzzer means that the teenager goes straight into the live shows!
“It was just overwhelming knowing that these people, who the public love to listen to, had enjoyed my performance too. All of their comments were amazing,” Courtney said in an interview to a media agency.
In fact, she considers America’s Got Talent as “the biggest show in the world” and that it is where all her idols are from.
On her Twitter account, she thanked everybody on the show for their “lovely comments and support.”
She even told reporters how her viral performance has changed her life. “Everybody is just really proud and happy for me. I have had people coming up to me in the street saying well done. It makes me feel proud,” she shared.
She then shared that her family is "on top of the world." And that she has inspired her younger brother to want to be famous too.
Interestingly, the seemingly shy Courtney is no stranger to television talent shows. She participated in The Voice Kids UK 2017 and even reached the finals.
She is also active on social media and Youtube, where she uploads some of her performances. At the moment, the young crooner is preparing for the next round at AGT.
While she may not have exactly been inspired by Janis Japlin, she sure had her confidence once she began crooning. She clearly proved that it is possible to achieve your dreams if you love what you do. We wish her luck!
