All About Zepeto, The Trendy 3D Avatar App That's Invading Your Social Media Feeds
We're low-key obsessed.
Avatar makers aren't a new thing by any stretch of the imagination. We've had Second Life, Bitmoji, Meez, Zwinky... the list goes on and on. Zepeto, the latest app of South Korean company Camp Mobile (the same folks behind the popular image messaging app SNOW), is a 3D avatar creator that's taking over social media feeds. Here's everything you need to know about the app — how to create your avatar, how to gain fans on Zepeto, and what features the app has.
When you first download the app, Zepeto asks you to take a photo of yourself, then it'll create a character that more or less looks like you.
Below is Zepeto's best approximation of my face. It's not terrible, but it also isn't that great.
But here's the fun part. If you're not happy with Zepeto's best guess, you can edit your features to make it look more accurate, adding makeup, facial hair, accessories, etc.
Some items can simply be unlocked by watching ads, but for most items, you'll need to spend coins. To earn coins, you can do simple things like taking photos of your character, completing "Daily Quests", trying your luck on the "Lucky Spin" feature, or playing the "Flying Zepeto" minigame (which is basically "Flappy Bird" with your Zepeto's face on it). And of course, you can purchase coins with real-world money.
Zepeto lets you visit other users and follow the ones that you find interesting. Everyone has their own space that they can customise to their own liking. Basically, you can choose your wallpaper and floors, as well as furnishings and light fixtures.
Much of Zepeto's popularity can be attributed to the cute character design and a feature that allows you to take photos of your avatar — either alone or with friends.
And you can edit the background to use images from your camera roll, which is sorta creepy and awesome at the same time. You can essentially use your Zepeto avatar as your stand-in in all your photos, which sounds like the makings of a Black Mirror plot, but hey, our robot overlords are inevitably going to take over the world, so we might as well have fun with tech while we can. Right?
Some users have gone as far as making celebrity Zepetos, so here's a photo of my avatar getting cozy with GDragon. And just hanging out with my peeps Troye Sivan and Ariana Grande (who looks like she went overboard with the spray tan).
Apart from taking photos with your friends' avatars, you can also interact with them through Zepeto's built-in chat feature. It's a pretty basic instant messaging feature, but it does have cute stickers.
Like other social networks, Zepeto lets you follow other users and gain followers. To get your friends to add you, the app gives you a unique code that lets others track down your avatar. How to gain fans on Zepeto is pretty straightforward, though it's a little challenging to stand out from the rest of the avatars due to your similar resources.
But gaining fans on Zepeto could be as simple as leaving your code in Zepeto threads (like in Zepeto's official Instagram), or on your existing social media accounts. The app also has a feature called "Zepeto Town Street", which lets you view random avatars and follow them if you want. Craft a greeting that's attention-grabbing enough and you'll probably get a decent amount of follows as well.
