The answer might surprise you.

Exactly how long is long enough in bed? And how long can a woman last in bed, anyway? How many rounds can satisfy a woman? Is one round not enough?

If you’re asking these questions, you’re not alone. Musicians have been singing about making love to their woman all night long for what seems like forever, so much so that tons of men have performance anxiety. But there have been studies on how long the average man lasts in bed, and it’s quite illuminating, to say the least.

Here’s how long a woman can last in bed

How long a woman can last in bed depends on a number of different factors. Some women orgasm quickly, then become too sensitive or uninterested for more. Others have trouble staying wet. In these cases, there are ways to help her last longer in bed, such as stimulating other erogenous zones, or using lubricant.

But according to a survey conducted by Saucy Dates, when answering the question “how long is long enough in bed”, women gave the average answer of 25 minutes and 51 seconds. Males gave similar answers, which means at least men and women see eye-to-eye when it comes to their sexual expectations. But the bad news is, the average male doesn’t even come close to lasting that long.

So how long does the average male last in bed?

According to research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2009, the average man lasts about 6 minutes in bed. To get this figure, researchers asked couples to start the timer as soon as vaginal penetration starts, stopping it as soon as the man ejaculated.

It’s interesting to note that men have a tendency to overestimate their sexual encounter’s longevity. Most men estimate their average time before orgasm to be 1.9 minutes longer.

To those of you breathing a sigh of relief after seeing those figures, you should then ask this question: is 6 minutes really enough?

According to the experts. it’s alright. In another study, sex therapists said:

  • intercourse lasting 1-2 minutes is “too short”
  • intercourse lasting 3-7 minutes is “adequate”
  • intercourse lasting 7-13 minutes is “desirable”
  • intercourse lasting 10-30 minutes is “too long”

Basically, if you’re like the average dude and you clock in 6 minutes, you get passing marks. It might not be fantastic, but it’ll do.

And those hours-long sex marathons that you might’ve fantasised about as a teenager? They may not be the best idea.

How many rounds can satisfy a woman? It’s all about quality, not quantity

Take note that these figures only take into account the amount of time between initial vaginal penetration to the man’s orgasm. It doesn’t even take into account foreplay — which, if you care about being a good lover (and you should) — is an essential part of sex.

In a 2004 study in the Journal of Sex Research that included foreplay, researchers found that the average couple dedicates 11-13 minutes to foreplay, followed by 7-8 minutes of intercourse. But the participants of the study did say that they wanted sex to last longer.

At the end of the day, you shouldn’t be asking how many rounds can satisfy a woman. How long a woman can last in bed is a case-to-case basis, and you should be communicating with your partner to learn what it takes to satisfy them.

“Sex is more than just intercourse, and the time you allot to it should include the time to generate arousal both mentally and physically,” sex therapist Ian Kerner tells GQ.

And “long enough in bed” can vary depending on your mood. Sometimes, a quickie is just right. Sometimes you might really want to take your time. Just pay attention to your partner’s needs and enjoy yourselves. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
