YAAAAS: Marvel Introduces Its First Filipino Superhero, Wave
Our little geek hearts can't take this!
In celebration of National Women’s Month, Marvel will be releasing new characters this May, including one badass Filipina. According to the comic book giant, the new superhero from Phillippines is called Wave, and who also happens to be a woman. Scroll on to read more about the new Filipino Marvel hero Wave.
Not much information has yet been released about the Filipino Marvel hero Wave, but she will be featured in the new series War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas, along with other new characters from China named Aero and Sword Master.
Other characters set to join in the team include S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo, Korean-American heroine Silk, and Chinese Kung-Fu master Shang-Chi.
Interestingly, this is not the first time a Filipino character was featured in a Marvel series, but what makes this significant is the fact that they are rarely featured in international pop culture. Prior to Wave, Marvel had introduced another Filipino superhero group called the Triumph Division, which debuted in 2008 in Invincible Iron Man #2.
Get Ready For Filipino Marvel Hero Wave
Based in Asia, the story will build off on the upcoming Marvel series War of the Realms, while featuring a total of four issues.
“War of the Realms is this big, big Marvel universe story involving all the heroes from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine, the whole line,” Marvel Editor Wil Moss said.
Co-authoring the first issue with Gang-Hyuk Lim, American director and comic writer Greg Pak featured the image of Wave on his Twitter account.
“As announced at @sxsw, I’m thrilled to share the great @leinilyu‘s stunning design of WAVE, Marvel’s new Filipino superhero! Gorgeous colors by @sunnygho!” Pak said.

Reflecting the true essence of a Filipina, Wave is featured looking all kickass, while equipped with her glossy black mane, twin swords, and morena skin complexion.
Geared to be part of the “crazed world of War of the Realms,” the official website dubbed Wave as “a mysterious Filipino heroine.”

Three Cheers For Diverse Representation
Local netizens in the Philippines have praised the comic book behemoth for including more Filipino representation into its world.
“#BlackPanther represented the black community. #CaptainMarvel raised the flag for women. And now I am hearing news about a new Marvel hero representing the Filipino race named #Wave,” said Twitter user @sherlocknorms. “I have so much respect for the #MCU for celebrating EQUALITY in all forms.”
