The REAL Secret Behind The ‘Anti-It Bag’ That Everybody Loves

The Boyy Bag gained so much attention and a cult status that it was even picked up to be displayed on the hallowed shelves of Collete in Paris

There was a time when the term 'It-bag' was used exclusively for luxury brands like Gucci, Prada, Dior and Chanel.
Every fashion blogger and stylist worth her salt, owned one of these gorgeous arm candies. No flatlay was complete without a YSL tassel clutch and no Parisian bistro could be shot without a Givenchy Antigona mini being in the frame.

Just when the fashion industry was getting used to the it bags, came Mansur Gavriel's bucket bags. They were everywhere—on our Instagram feeds, on actors, on models- everybody was sporting a Gavriel bag or a similar version of it.

But the good thing about the bucket bag explosion was that many niche brands entered mainstream fashion. Since then, each year we've seen a new bag setting the trend

One among them is the 'anti-it' Boyy bag, designed by the Boyy Boutique.

Brainchild of Bangkok-based designer couple Wannasiri Kongman and Jesse Dorsey, the Boyy Boutique was started a decade ago. And, got its peculiar name from Kongman's nickname.

"Wannasiri is a Thai native, all Thais have peculiar nicknames, Wannasiri’s happened to be Boy. We have a masculine style philosophy, then we thought we won’t be able to trademark “Boy”, so we added the 2nd Y; also signifying two people," Dorsey told Luisaviaroma

With a penchant for clean design and retro buckles, the two started designing women's accessories. And bags became their primary selling point.

"Wannasiri had a deep obsession with handbags, I was producing music at the time, and basically loved working on anything creative, having a sound or vision and turning it into something tangible… I proposed to Wannasiri let’s design a bag rather than talk about existing bags … the rest was history," Dorsey added.

The Boyy bags that start anywhere between S$1,500 and S$1,700, come in various shapes and sizes. Some of its prominent designs include the Slash and Romeo.

The couple gets the materials for their products from Italy, but manufacture them in Bangkok.

"Our shoes and sunglasses are produced in Italy, our bags are made of all Italian materials but produced in Bangkok, we like being close to production. Bangkok is currently our home. Italy has played such an endearing role in our brand and lives, it’s like our second home, we love the people, food, endless beauty within and incredible landscapes/environments in such a small proximity," as Dorsey explains.
