15 Over-The-Top Duets To Belt Out On Your Next Karaoke Night
Go big or go home, amirite?
So the full video for "Shallow" from A Star Is Born just dropped and we're feeling all the feelings. Though we're only 18 years into this century, we've pegged it as one of the best duets of the 21st century.
There's just something about male and female duets that just tug at our heartstrings and make us feel extra emotional, you know? So while we're marinating in all these emotions, we compiled a list of some of the best duets of the 21st century that you should definitely bring to your next karaoke night.
Best Duets of the 21st Century to Sing at Karaoke (So Far)
1. "Shallow" by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper (2018)
Oh my goodness, where do we even begin? Lady Gaga, as expected, is phenomenal here, but it's Bradley Cooper who's blown us away. Seriously, where was this talent hiding all these years? We hope this isn't the last time we hear him singing because that voice is gooorgeous. A star is born, indeed.
I predict that this song will be overplayed to death and I'll end up hating the sound of it come December, but for now I'm abusing the replay button because I just can't get enough of it's over-the-topness. Such emotions! Such drama! I need the premiere to come sooner because my body is so very ready.
2. "My Boo" by Usher & Alicia Keys (2004)
Here we have peak Usher and fresh-faced Alicia Keys giving us one of the most memorable anthems of the decade. This is the perfect song to get the party started on karaoke night — you'll have everyone singing along.
3. "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran & Beyoncé (2017)
When Ed Sheeran covered Beyonce's "Drunk In Love", we didn't know that it would lead to this extra heartfelt ballad that made us sigh the first time we heard it (and roll our eyes by the time every radio station seemed to be playing it every 30 minutes). But in spite of its overplayed status, we can't deny that it's a fantastic duet. Good luck nailing Queen B's runs. We believe in you.
4. "Say Something" by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera (2013)
When you and your friends' voices are hoarse and you really shouldn't keep singing — but you really want to keep singing — take the mellow route with a not-so-demanding song like this one. You might not be able to show off your pipes, but you can make up for it by doing all the emoting.
5. "Almost Is Never Enough" by Ariana Grande & Nathan Sykes (2013)
Who cares if you can't sing like Ariana? If you feel the pain behind the lyrics of this song, then you're guaranteed to give an unforgettable experience — but whether that's a good or bad kind of unforgettable is entirely up to you.
6. "Just Give Me A Reason" by P!nk and Nate Ruess (2012)
P!nk and Nate make this tune sound simple, but don't be fooled. You've gotta have a decent range and sufficient control of your voice to do the song justice, but heck, it's not as if the lack of talent has ever stopped us from trying, eh?
7. "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglova (2006)
Here's your challenge: Pull of the harmonies in this epic song's climax. Do it and see your friends' jaws drop to the floor.
8. "Way Back Into Love" by Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore (2007)
Here's the perfect choice for those of you who like staying in their safe space on karaoke night (BOO! loljk). If non-singers Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore can pull this song off, then you can, too!
9. "Secret Love Song" by Little Mix & Jason Derulo (2015)
For the extra ambitious out there who think they can have a go at Perrie Edwards' vocals, here ya go. "Secret Love Song" is a duet-optional song that'll make your throat sore by the end of it, but if you're doing karaoke right, it'll be worth it.
10. "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" by Christina Aguilera & Ricky Martin (2000)
I think I'm one of the very few people who still think about this song on the regular, which is a travesty. "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" is peak early-2000s goodness and hugely underrated and rightfully deserves to be listed as one of the best duets of the 21st century. Give it a listen and remember just how good the song is.
11. "Hate That I Love You" by Rihanna feat. Ne-Yo (2007)
We debated the inclusion of this song cause Riri's just a little too cool for this list (and you don't want to go down the cool route on karaoke night, you want to PERFORM), but the dramatic bridge changed our minds. When Ne-Yo and Rihanna harmonised, "But no one in this world knows me the way you know me", we totally felt that.
12. "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" by Meghan Trainor and John Legend (2015)
Like "Almost Is Never Enough", "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" has that overdramatic throwback sound made for karaoke. And like "Almost Is Never Enough", mere mortals won't be able to do the song justice, but that doesn't mean they(/we) won't try.
13. "Broken Strings" by James Morrison and Nelly Furtado (2008)
Confession: I totally forgot about this song until I started writing this list. But. It's. So. Good. And by good, I mean it's perfect for belting out with your BFFs while waving a beer bottle in the air.
14. "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum (2009)
This song isn't too demanding on the pipes, but it's got drama and it's got harmonies, which is all you really need in a good duet.
15. "Breaking Free" from by Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens (2006)
I hated this song when it first came out, and I still hate it to this day, but it's a lot of fun on karaoke night.
And it might be strange to conclude this list with a song that I don't like, but the songs you pick when you're out doing karaoke with your friends is not about picking the songs you listen to on the regular (unless you can take this much auditory drama on a regular basis). It's not even about hitting the right notes. It's about letting loose, laughing at yourself, and having fun.
